The Perfect Weekend at Jervis Bay: A Complete Itinerary

A weekend at Jervis Bay is one of the best value getaways available from Sydney. In just two days, you can experience world-famous white sand beaches, up-close dolphin encounters, excellent local food, snorkelling in a pristine marine park, and the extraordinary beauty of Booderee National Park. The key to a great Jervis Bay weekend is a little planning — particularly for parking at Hyams Beach and any dolphin cruise bookings — and the willingness to arrive early on both days. This itinerary is designed for families but works equally well for couples and groups.

Day 1: Huskisson, Dolphins, and Hyams Beach

Start your first morning with an early dolphin watch cruise — book in advance and aim for the first departure of the day when conditions are calmest and the bay is most magical. After the cruise (typically back by lunchtime), grab a coffee and brunch in Huskisson's excellent cafe strip on Owen Street — try the Huskisson Bakehouse for pies and pastries or grab a coffee from one of the competing cafes. After lunch, make the 10-minute drive south to Hyams Beach. Arrive at the beach by 2pm — the morning crowds will have thinned significantly by then, and the afternoon light on the white sand is particularly beautiful. Spend 2–3 hours at the beach, allowing time for snorkelling around the rocks at the northern end if conditions are clear. Return to Huskisson for dinner — the town has excellent seafood restaurants (check current operators before visiting). End the evening with a walk along the Huskisson foreshore as the sun sets over the bay.

Day 2: Booderee National Park and Murrays Beach

Day two is dedicated to Booderee National Park. Purchase your park day pass at the entrance gate (note: EFTPOS available but bring cash as a backup). Head first to the Booderee Botanic Gardens — allow an hour for a peaceful walk through one of Australia's few botanic gardens within a national park. The gardens are particularly magical in the morning. Next, drive to Greenpatch Beach for a swim and a walk along the shoreline — the beach is beautiful and usually much quieter than Hyams Beach. After lunch at your campground or a picnic by the beach, make your way to Murrays Beach via the short walking track for an afternoon snorkelling session. This beach is one of the best snorkelling spots in NSW. Late afternoon — return to Huskisson, pack the car, and begin the drive home. The trip back to Sydney is about 2.5 hours — timing it for late afternoon/early evening helps avoid peak Sydney traffic.

Where to Stay for a Weekend

Huskisson is the ideal base for a weekend visit. The town has good accommodation options including the Huskisson White Sands Tourist Park, several holiday house options, and motels. For a more immersive experience, consider booking a campsite at Greenpatch in Booderee National Park — waking up to kangaroos in your campsite and walking to the beach in 5 minutes is a genuinely extraordinary experience. However, Booderee campsites book out months in advance for weekends — planning ahead is essential. For couples without children, a holiday house in Vincentia or Hyams Beach village itself can be a wonderful option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is two days enough for Jervis Bay?
Two days is enough to see the highlights — Hyams Beach, a dolphin cruise, Huskisson town, and Booderee National Park. For a more relaxed experience with children, 3–4 days is ideal.
What should we book in advance for a weekend trip?
Book your dolphin cruise in advance (essential during peak periods), and book your accommodation well ahead — Jervis Bay is extremely popular and fills months in advance for summer weekends and school holidays.
Can we do Jervis Bay as a day trip from Sydney?
Technically yes — it's about 2.5 hours each way. But the driving time significantly reduces your time at the destination. An overnight or weekend stay is much more rewarding and allows you to experience the beach at its best in the morning hours.
