Walking Tracks in Booderee National Park: The Complete Guide

Booderee National Park contains some of the finest coastal walking tracks in NSW — routes through magnificent spotted gum forest, along pristine bay beaches, over dramatic headlands, and through the extraordinary wildflower heaths of the Beecroft Peninsula. Walking in Booderee is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the park's extraordinary biodiversity, away from the beaches and campgrounds that attract most visitors.

Greenpatch to Murrays Beach Walk

The most popular walking track in Booderee is the 2.5km one-way route from Greenpatch Campground to Murrays Beach. The track passes through magnificent spotted gum eucalypt forest, coastal heath, and low scrubland before arriving at the pristine beach. The walking is moderate — some undulation but no serious climbing — and is suitable for fit children aged 6 and above. Birdwatching along this track is extraordinary: crimson rosellas, rainbow lorikeets, various honeyeaters, and frequent sightings of sea eagles overhead are the norm. The track can be walked one way and a car shuttle arranged, or walked return for a 5km round trip. Allow 90–120 minutes for the return journey at a comfortable family pace.

Bowen Island Walk

The Bowen Island circuit is one of the most scenic walks in Booderee — a loop track that takes in the elevated coastal heath of Bowen Island Point with extraordinary views across the bay entrance. The walk passes through diverse coastal habitats and provides excellent opportunities for whale watching during the June–November season. The track is well-maintained and moderately challenging — suitable for families with children aged 8 and above. Combine this walk with a visit to the Booderee Botanic Gardens nearby for a full morning of nature exploration.

Cave Beach Track

A well-maintained track leads from the Cave Beach car park to the beach itself and the dramatic sea caves that give the beach its name. This short walk (approximately 1km each way) passes through coastal vegetation and provides a gentle introduction to the ocean-facing side of Booderee. The sea caves are accessible at low tide in calm conditions and are the highlight of the walk. A 4WD track also accesses this area, but walking is the recommended approach for most visitors. Allow 30–45 minutes return including time at the beach.

Wildlife on Booderee's Tracks

Walking in Booderee provides consistently excellent wildlife encounters. Kangaroos and wallabies are commonly seen browsing in the heath and clearing areas — the quieter tracks see them most reliably in the early morning and late afternoon. Lace monitors (large goannas) are frequently seen crossing tracks and basking on rocks. Over 200 bird species have been recorded in the park — serious birdwatchers should bring a field guide. The track edge vegetation supports an exceptional variety of native plants, including many that flower spectacularly in spring (September–November). Always wear boots and use insect repellent — ticks can be present in the coastal heath.
